Brief Overview

Byleth is a mercenary from Fódlan, and the vessel to the creator Goddess Sothis. She is origin agnostic but prefers to think of her memories as being real as opposed to psychologically generated.

Early Life

Byleth was born to mother Sitri and father Jeralt in Fódlan's year 1159. Her mother died shortly after she was born; unbeknownst to Jeralt and Byleth, it was due to Byleth being stillborn at birth. Sitri was secretly an experiment by the archbishop of the Church of Seiros (and secretly Seiros herself) to resurrect her mother, the creator goddess Sothis. Sitri begged the archbishop to save the child, and she did, but it killed Sitri in the process, and Byleth was left without a heartbeat and an inability to strongly feel emotions. suspecting the involvement of the church in his wife's death, Jeralt left the Knights of Seiros, the primary military organization of the Church of Seiros, and became a mercenary. Jeralt didn't tell Byleth of her true parentage of much about the Church of Seiros or the world; he trained her as a mercenary, and when she was old enough, she joined his mercenary band. Byleth begins having dreams of Sothis, although she does not know who she is at the time or Sothis's name.

Shortly before leaving for a job, she and Jeralt run into Dimitri, Edelgard, and Khalid (who is using the name Claude), who are from the Garreg Mach Monastery's Officer Academy. They are under attack by bandits, and Jeralt and Byleth join up with the trio in order to rescue them. During the battle, Edelgard has one more experience with Sothis where she reveals her name and the ability for Byleth to briefly rewind time.

After defeating the bandits, the knights of Seiros arrive and recognize Jeralt, inviting both of them to visit the monastery, which they agree to. Before departing, Byleth speaks to the trio and learns that they are all the future leaders of the three major countries in Fódlan, and all three invited them to join their kingdoms. Byleth declined to make any commitments.

Once at the Monastery, the Archbishop of the church, impressed with Byleth's performance, offered her a job as a teacher at the academy for the upcoming year. Byleth accepts, despite Jeralt not trusting the Archbishop, and she chooses to teach the Blue Lions class which is represented by Dimitri and nobles from his kingdom.

During the course of the school year, defectors from the church invade in order to steal the corpse of Seiros, the daughter of Sothis. Byleth and the class are able to defeat the rebels, but when Seiros's tomb is opened, it reveals the Sword of the Creator, which Byleth takes up to defeat the leader of the rebels. Byleth's ability to wield the sword is considered unusual, but she is in possession of the Crest of the last user of the Sword.

During the intervening months, Jeralt is killed by a member of a group Byleth would later learn was part of a group called Those Who Slither in the Dark. During the course of the battle, Sothis gives Byleth all her power, and Byleth's hair and eyes lighten into a teal color.

Several months pass, during which the leader of the rebellious group is revealed to be the Flame Emperor. The Archbishop, secretly being Seiros herself the whole time, leads Byleth down to the Holy Tomb in hopes that she can reawaken her mother, Sothis, in Byleth's body. However, said awakening does not go as she hoped, and the rebels invade the holy tomb, laying siege to the monastery. The Flame Emperor arrives, and during the fight, their mask is knocked off, revealing them to be Edelgard herself, who declares herself to be the empress of Adrestia and declares war on the church of Seiros.

They are able to fend off the first wave of attacks, but the second wave of Adrestian troops makes progress. the Archbishop reveals her true form as the Immaculate one and transforms into a dragon to attack the invading troops. Byleth is hit during the fray and falls into a ravine, going missing for five years.

When she returns and reunites with the class of blue lions, instead of going to war against the Adrestian empire right away, Byleth seeks out Khalid in order to get information on the people that killed Jeralt and Edelgard's allies. She is able to get Dimitri and Khalid to join forces and share information, and she learned of the connection between Those Who Slither in the Dark and the church, as well as the experiments that both were conducting on the Adrestian royal family and others. With this information she is able to convince Dimitri to withdraw his explicit support from the church, and is eventually able to get Edelgard to the negotiation table so that all three houses can freely share the information they know.

With Edelgard tentatively on their side, they are able to use their combined connections to wage war on Those Who Slither in the Dark, as well as dethrone the archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Byleth acts as the temporary head of the church along with Seteth and Flayn, who agree to cooperate, and enacts reforms as well as purging those responsible for the experiments that led to Edelgard and Byleth's suffering. Those Who Slither in the Dark are eliminated eventually, and Edelgard, Dimitri, and Khalid agree to work together to help create a better Fódlan.
